Math - Math is taught in Topics from our textbook. There will be a strong emphasis on problem solving using higher level thinking skills throughout each topic. We have a new textbook with a lot of fun online resources for you to access at home. 
 
1st Six Weeks: Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication / Division Facts, and Problem Solving
 
2nd Six Weeks: Two Digit Multiplication, Long Division, and Problem Solving
 
3rd Six Weeks: Geometry and Problem Solving
 
4th Six Weeks: Transformations, Congruency, Symmetry, Probability, and Problem Solving
 
5th Six Weeks: Fractions, Decimals, Measurement, and Problem Solving
 
6th Six Weeks: Measurement, Problem Solving, and Preparation for 5th Grade
 
Reading - Our reading skills will be taught and reinforced through the use of class novel studies as well as child chosen Genre Bingo books. Each child will be encouraged to get at least four bingos over the school year. It is my hope that through the selection of books your child will become a life long reader.  
                                                                                                                          Written Expression - Through a Writer’s Workshop, your child will have the opportunity to write daily. In addition, we will be doing many writing activities across all content areas. We will concentrate on developing voice in our writing and using various types of figurative language to enhance our writing style. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling will all be taught within the context of writing.
 
Handwriting - Cursive writing practice will be given weekly and assessed using the weekly spelling tests.
 
Social Studies – We will be doing an in depth study of Texas history, culture, government, and geography.
 
Science – We will be using the McGraw Hill Science Units and many hands on experiments to cover various units each six weeks.   Each unit will be reinforced during our weekly Science Lab.
 
1st Six Weeks: Classification of Organisms, Texas Biomes, and Animal Adaptations
 
2nd Six Weeks: Earth Science: Geology Past and Present
 
3rd Six Weeks: Earth Science: Rocks, Weathering, and Erosion
 
4th Six Weeks: Living Systems: Inherited and Learned Traits
 
5th Six Weeks: Measurement and Matter
 
6th Six Weeks: Energy: Electricity and Light
